Nixon and Uruguay
The National Security Archive, a non-governmental research institute and library at The George Washington University, has posted new documents about the Nixon administration and Uruguay. After the kidnapping of the American advisor, Dan Mitrione, the Nixon administration instructed the US Ambassador to Uruguay to suggest to the Uruguayan Government that leftist prisoners should be threatened with death if Mitrione were killed. After his death, Uruguay began to release death squads against the leftist insurgency. You can read a short history and a few of the documents on the National Security Archives webpage.
