Yesterday, President Obama nominated Julius Genachowski to be head of the FCC, bolstering the increasingly strong federal support for the principles of Net Neutrality. Genachowski helped to author the president's technological agenda during his campaign, and made Net Neutrality a high priority. Another strong backer is Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), who was recently made chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology . This pro-consumer stance is an abrupt turnaround from Bush administration arguments of just a year and a half ago.
Sen. Kerry has also been a vocal proponent of codifying a broadband strategy for the country. The recently-passed American Reinvestment and Recovery Act includes nearly $7.2 billion for broadband initiatives, and attaches open Internet conditions to the funds. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the FCC, and the Office of Rural Development will be holding the first of several public meetings on these new programs next week. Can't make it to DC? They'll be streaming the meeting live online -- get more information in this Federal Register announcement.
