NC Governor's Budget Proposal

Governor Beverly Perdue today unveiled her 2009-2011 Budget Proposal for North Carolina. A 118-page summary is available here. A lot of the reporting so far has focused on the proposed cigarette and alcohol tax increases, but UNCG's campus would also feel the impact of the suggested $167 million loss to universities across the state.

The UNC Board of Governors has developed several alternative plans for budget cuts. The 7% contingency plan comes close to the governor's proposal, with a savings of $180.2 million. This Board of Governors policy discussion document goes through the entire system and lists specific cuts that would be made, campus-by-campus.

Examples for UNCG's portion of cuts ($11.8 million):
  • Reduction of 275 class sections
  • Eliminate 5 positions that support IT services
  • 60% of freshman seminar classes will be eliminated
  • Eliminate 10 positions in the facilities division

Hopefully, Governor Perdue will keep her promise and veto the budget which will raises taxes on working people and cut funding for education.
